No high-speed data for Google purchased Nexus 4?

Yesterday, I moved my Google Nexus 4 & Google Galaxy Nexus phones from AT&T to T-Mobile. These phones were purchased from Google, not AT&T. After the numbers were ported and I inserted the T-Mobile SIM cards & rebooted, all seemed good. I was able to browse at high speeds & tether my laptop through the phone also. I paid no attention to the # of bars or type of data connection noted at the bar on top of the screen.

 

Later in the evening, I could not browse... Couldn't even load the google home page. Rebooted repeatedly. This morning, same problem. I notice the bars at the top of my screen cycle frequently from 4 to none, blue to gray, but my connection type is always E.

 

I call T-Mobile tech support and they tell me because these phones were not purchased from T-Mobile, they will only access Edge network, never the higher speed access. I explained these are not AT&T phones... but purchased directly from the manufacturer, and they say it doesn't matter. We will never get 4G / 3G / HSPA on T-Mobile.

 

I am frustrated & perplexed, angry I spent the time switching. Why was I sold the 4G package if I can never get it?

 

Any advice?
