3G connectivity issues on iPhone 4 iOS 5.0.1

I recently went into my settings and toggled "enable 3G" to "ON". Within a minute or so, the Edge icon in my status bar changed to 3G. I tested out my new data connection and it was working well and extremely faster than normal. I then drove only a couple miles to my house (where I usually get great signal strength) when I noticed that my data switched back to Edge. The next day I drove in two different areas and my data kept switching back and forth between Edge and 3G as I was driving. Basically, my phone can be on Edge in one area, then 3G just down the street a bit, then back to Edge a little bit further. Also, it is not like I am in the middle of nowhere. I live in a somewhat busy area. I have tried toggling 3G on and off, toggling airplane mode on and off, and restarting my phone when in an area where I have Edge, but it just stays on Edge.

I called a T-Mobile tech support guy and he told me that it is probably due to my area not being a full-coverage 3G area yet and that I will just have to wait until my area is fully covered. I then asked him if it could have anything to do with my APN settings and although he was not positive, he said he does not think it would make a difference. My current APN is the wap.voicestream.com one and not the epc.tmobile.com one that is listed in the new guide for APN settings on here. All of my other network settings are the same as the guide. He said the epc.tmobile.com one is pretty much for the newer iPhone's on T-Mobile's network and that it shouldn't make a difference since the wap.voicestream.com is working on my iPhone 4.

I did a little research on this before calling the T-Mobile tech support and although I saw nothing definitive, it looked like switching my APN could possibly be something I'd need to do to get the 3G to work seamlessly. I would just to hate to switch it if it won't help, especially when everything else, including MMS, is working fine currently *knock on wood*

Does anybody know if actually switching to the epc.tmobile.com APN will help? Or would doing something like "reset network settings" fix the issue?

Also, I am using an iPhone 4 on iOS 5.0.1 with the wap.voicestream.com APN

Thank you in advance!
