Lost in the band frequencies

Hi all,

I am completely lost trying to understand the different band frequencies. I thought that an unlocked phone would work everywhere but I am discovering that it's not so simple...

I want a medium priced (~$300) android smartphone to work here in Los Angeles CA with T-mobile at a fast speed

but also a great plus would be that it works (even slow internet or no internet but at least calling and texting) in Berlin Germany and Paris France (with a SIM card from these country of course) where I will be this summer.

- The one I would really like is the Galaxy S3 mini, what would be my speed in LA with T-mobile (3G ? 4G? and what the hell is 3.5G ??)

Also there are two versions on amazon : US or international

Amazon.com: Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini I8190 Sapphire Black Factory Unlocked World Phone: Cell Phones & Accessories

but when I look at the band frequencies in the specs they are the same !!! Which one do I want ?

- I am also open to recommendation for another phone, especially if it allowed me to get 4G in Los Angeles but I think this is only for high-end phones, right ? Anyway 3g is probably good enough

- lastly, I am worried about the size of the SIM cards. Is this standardized ? (I know there is normal, mini and nano ?) Which size does T-mobile use, which size do European carriers use and which size are these two phones mentioned earlier ?

Thank you thank you !!

Cheers,
