com.google.process.gapps error

I am getting the message "Unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped". Also, I cannot access the Play Store and no apps will update or download. I have tried clearing caches and data and everything I can think of.  Most of the apps that are loaded on the phone continue to work.  I have also searched for help on this forum and nothing has been successful.  Does anyone have any advice on what to do?  Any help would be appreciated.
