Using a pre-paid phone on a value plan

If I get a phone on a pre-paid (T-Mobile) plan and activate it, can I switch sims immediately with an old phone currently on a value plan? Or do I have wait the minimum time till I can unlock the phone? [The pre-paid plan will not be used indefinitely.]
