Can't get 3G and Edge is slow

Hi,

I recently switched to T-Mobiles Prepaid plan in my area. I am promised up to 4G speeds, however my current device only supports up to 3G. I am fine with that but right now I can only get Edge running with real bad pings at 20 to 50k. This wouldn't be so bad but I am having trouble logging into my accounts on my Android device due to connections timing out.

I have chatted to a rep here and we went through all the APN steps and settings and still couldn't get it to 3G and couldn't get the Edge latency problems figured out. So right now my data is almost useless as the connection is still timing out most of the time. He told me to call technical support but right now as this is my only phone I don't know how I would troubleshoot the device and talk to them at the same time.

My device is not a T-Mobile branded phone and is a unlocked Samsung Galaxy 5 which has almost the same specs as T-Mobile's Samsung Dart. The only difference between the two on network is that the Galaxy 5 supports one extra frequency band.

I have also looked at the service maps and there is suppose to be pretty good 3G service here according to them. My zip is 88210 in the United States.

Also I would like to add that my old carrier only had Edge but with faster speeds than what I am seeing with T-Mobile at this time. I am thinking it is a configuration problem though, since the map states the service is here.

So I am coming here for support in hopes that someone had the same problem and figured out a solution.
