understanding billing

I went online to pay my bill on Friday and it was a lot more than I expected it to be but before thinking I paid about $90 of it. I then checked to see exactly what was wrong and why the bill was so high and saw that I was charged $58 by the 9th of July. But I started my plan on the 5th, so that was one problem. When I called in to talk to someone about it, she told me that I was being charged an activation fee. She took that off and now my bill is $4.11, but I still don't understand what happened to my $90. I was told my bill would only be about $88 and then was told on Friday that I have a student discount so it'd be even less. Could someone explain please? Is there a way I could get part of that $90 back or something like that?
